Knol Allegedly Rhymes With Call

Tag: Random FactsDarren Barefoot @ 3:49 pm

On a Wikipedia talk page, I started a little discussion of how Knol is pronounced. Apparently somebody heard a report on NPR about Google Knol, and they say that it rhymes with ‘call’. That is, it sounds like the first syllable of the term ‘knowledge’.

That seems to make sense. Then a bit of debate ensued about difference pronunciations of ‘knowledge’, and the usual ‘reliable sources’ business and so forth. I gather we’re going to have to wait until a few Google employees say the word and it gets recorded for posterity. I’m liking the ‘knol equals call’ theory though–Occam’s razor and all that.

Another random fact (probably not worth a new blog post, but a bit of research and my discovery might not be the only one):

www.freewebs.com/knol is already taken. So is the gmail username ‘knol’. Theres probably other accounts already created, and it might not matter, but once knol actually becomes popular - you can be sure freewebs.com/knol will become something and knol@gmail.com is probably patiently waiting until he gets an invitation.

Oh, and knoluser@gmail.com is also taken. Could it be Google’s, since that is the gmail account shown on the image preview of Knol?

So early discussions suggest that ‘Knol’ rhymes with ‘call’
because ‘know’ sounds like ‘call’ in the word knowledge? To be
accurate, that would mean that the “l” would need to be included, thereby
making it ‘knowl,’ which independent of the ‘edge’ (of
    knowl-edge) would rhyme with ‘bowl.’

Wish I knew the phonetic rules for “ol” words. The fact that
‘awol’ rhymes with ‘call’ and ‘bristol’ rhymes with ‘bowl’ leads
me to believe that “ol” preceded by a double consonant equals
the “ole” sound until, of course, I remember that ‘carol’ also
rhymes with bowl and it is preceded by a single consonant.

    Oh well… like you’ve already stated… I guess we’ll have to
wait on google for the proper pronunciation.
